Beautiful Dissent Preview: soundcloud.com/eastcapecalling/cober-beautiful-dissent-preview

I wanted to create a body of work that gives the listener a glimpse of what pedal steel guitar can do. Pedal steel because of the way it allows one to float in and out of chords and sounds....it can really capture a mood or feeling, in a way unlike any other instrument. It's like playing a ghost.

Spiritually, Beautiful Dissent means I'm still here, it means we're still here. The world we live in today can feel brutal, wrong, backwards. Yet, there are people, moving forward, aware they are part of a community, pushing for progress, trying to find better ways even though their environments tell them success is exactly otherwise. People who do this, are examples of beautiful dissent. This EP is a call to action of sorts, part of the longer journey to finding one's inner peace. The song titles actually work together to form a poem. For some time I have wanted to do more instrumental work, as words can’t always express what is needed.

I started Cober as a solo studio project with a full band sound and recorded 'Crashpilot' in 2000. I found a good group of people while recording that album who would later become my live band. Two years later I released one more full band studio album, 'The Breaker'. It was a great time, being able to tour with a band and all, but things sort of have a way of coming full circle. In 2005, Cober returned to its solo roots, becoming a one piece band with me playing a double neck SG through two Marshall half stacks. This allowed me to create more intimate performances live and also on recordings. Cober has been a solo endeavor ever since. 'Eulogy' came out in 2006, 'The Western Cutter' in 2009 and I released an album under my name in 2016 called 'Begin Again'. There have been a few singles released, as well.

I feel like pedal steel has been calling me for a very long time and I finally made my way to it. As long as I can remember, the sound of steel drew me in, I just did not realize it was a steel guitar I was hearing. I thought it was just a really cool slide part. I think this is the case for many people. There is a real obsession that comes with playing pedal steel. You really have to want it, and that is just one of the many things I love about the instrument. It will always challenge you. It's like getting lost in an alternate universe. It's pretty magical.

I wouldn't say the instrument has changed me musically, it has enhanced my musical life, given me that alternate universe, mind, body and soul.
